From Earth to Earth to Earth is an ongoing research project tracing traditional Chinese ceramics through the landscape, traditional ceramic craft techniques, and firing in architectural scale kilns. The research begins with mapping the land and understanding the geology and climate that informs a diverse range of traditions throughout the country. The research looks at the scale of the country on either side of the Qin Mountain divide, and also local landforms in mountains, rivers, and forests that allow a kiln town to thrive.

The research draws from Ming and Qing dynasty manuscripts to study centuries-old imperial techniques. These traditions have been passed on faithfully through masters, apprentices, and maintained by a high standard of craft so that they are still practiced in contemporary Chinese ceramics today.

China has also had diverse kiln typologies throughout its history. From Earth to Earth to Earth explores the inner workings of the mantou kiln 「饅頭窯」, egg-shaped kiln 「镇窑」, and dragon kiln 「龙窑」through the lens of architecture. The research uses drawings to study kiln construction, firing techniques, and response to the climate and landscape.
